Decorating a Child’s Bedroom

When it comes to decorating a child’s bedroom it’s not exactly the easiest of tasks considering all the activities they’re into, all the television programmes they enjoy and the most difficult task of all- finding something they won’t grow out of in a few months. Girls want fairies and butterflies where as boys want footballs and constellations so where do you start?
Walls, windows and bedding are parts of the room that can be used as a base; whatever the theme the room takes, these things can remain neutral but still blend in, thus making a quick and cheap change of decoration easier if necessary. However you don’t have to follow this rule– you could have a feature wall where you either use themed wall paper or things like stencils, wall paintings, posters and so fourth. You could keep the walls neutral but go all-out on the bedding and have a ‘Superman’ duvet cover with curtains to match.
Before including the child’s input in the decoration, decide your budget and your boundaries, after all, it is your house. When these things have been decide gather ideas from the child by finding out their favourite colour, favourite activities, favourite objects or toys and what kind of theme they’d like the room to take.
Another part of the room to consider is the furniture. One danger might be buying themed objects, the problem being that they will go out of date, where as buying wooden furniture can provide a lot more options. For one, wooden items can remain just simply as the natural wood, as well as being painted or even decorated with stencils. The great thing about wooden furniture is that it can last a long time and can be stripped down and re-decorated any time that the room changes. The other point to be made is that a lot of themed furniture can be of poorer quality than wooden items which will mean not only will it go out of date but probably won’t last as long either.
However you decide to decorate a child’s room keep in mind that a bedroom should be a place that provides a get-away, and for a child it’s not only somewhere for them to sleep but also a place for them to play. Allow some of the child’s personality to shine through into the decor of the room as well as your own and most importantly –be creative because this is one room where you really can be and it will be thoroughly appreciated.
